Preventing Failure: Common Issues with Dismantling Joints and How to Avoid Them

The most frequent problem is leakage, often stemming from an over-compressed or damaged gasket. This occurs if the joint is incorrectly adjusted, putting excessive pressure on the sealing face, or if an incompatible gasket material is used for the fluid service. Solution: Always adjust the joint to the correct length and use manufacturer-recommended gasket materials.
Corrosion of the tie-rods and sleeve is another issue, especially in underground or aggressive environments. Severely corroded rods can snap under tension. Prevention involves selecting materials like stainless steel tie-rods for corrosive settings and ensuring protective coatings are intact during installation. Misalignment during installation imposes bending stress on the rods, leading to fatigue failure. Pipes must be properly aligned before final tightening of the joint's flange bolts.
Improper use is a critical error. A Dismantling Joint is not an expansion joint; it should not be used to absorb continuous thermal movement. It is a static adjustment device. Using it dynamically will lead to gasket failure and leakage.
